Characteristics: Macaws are large parrots; they are typically very bright in color. Macaws have large powerful beaks; they love to chew; and should be provided toys for this reason. Most Macaws are gentle and non-aggressive; however some will bite; they should be handled from a young age to insure not injury is caused. Macaws are typically loud birds, and will make their presence known. They can be taught to "speak" or imitate speech. |
Health Concerns: Macaws must have frequent interaction and attention, a lack of this can lead depression and even physical damage. Some Macaws will pluck their feathers as a result of being in captivity.
